There’s something extra special about traveling during the holiday season—and my December journey through Portugal was truly unforgettable. From a charming pre-cruise stay in Lisbon to a festive sailing along the Douro River from Porto to Porto, this experience combined culture, comfort, incredible wine, and holiday magic.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a river cruise with cozy seasonal touches, stunning scenery, and world-class wine, this one deserves a spot on your list.

One of the highlights of this journey was having the opportunity to sail aboard AmaWaterways’ brand-new ship, AmaSintra. Being on a brand-new vessel made the experience even more special—from the modern design and spacious staterooms to the beautifully appointed public spaces and thoughtful details throughout.

Everything felt fresh, elegant, and perfectly designed for river cruising, creating a true boutique-hotel-on-the-water experience. The crew’s pride in their new ship was evident, and the service was exceptional from start to finish.

Cruising the Douro aboard AmaSintra made this journey feel both luxurious and intimate, an ideal setting for taking in Portugal’s stunning wine country.

Pre-Cruise in Lisbon: The Perfect Beginning

Before boarding our ship, I enjoyed three wonderful nights in Lisbon through AmaWaterways’ pre-cruise program, and it was the perfect way to ease into the journey.

Lisbon’s energy is infectious. From riding iconic trams through Alfama’s winding streets to strolling along the Tagus River and enjoying fresh pastries at local cafés, every day felt effortless and enriching.

Highlights included:

• Guided sightseeing with expert local guides

• Time to explore neighborhoods, shops, and cafés on our own

• Delicious Portuguese cuisine and wine

• A relaxed pace that set the tone for the entire trip

Pre-cruise programs like this are one of my favorite ways to travel because everything is seamlessly arranged—hotels, transfers, tours—so you can simply enjoy.

Sailing the Douro: Portugal’s Wine Country at Its Best

Once in Porto, we boarded our beautifully designed AmaWaterways ship and began our roundtrip cruise along the Douro River, one of Europe’s most scenic waterways.

The Douro Valley is breathtaking. Rolling hills covered in terraced vineyards, charming riverside towns, and peaceful stretches of water create postcard-worthy views at every turn.

During the cruise, we enjoyed:

• Guided visits to wine estates and villages

• Scenic cruising through UNESCO-listed landscapes

• Cultural excursions with local insight

• Plenty of time to relax onboard and take in the views

This itinerary strikes a wonderful balance between sightseeing and leisure—perfect for travelers who want depth without feeling rushed.

Holiday Magic Onboard: A Festive December Cruise

Traveling in December added an extra layer of charm to this journey. From the moment we stepped onboard, the ship felt warm, cozy, and festive.

The holiday décor was beautifully done, with twinkling lights, Christmas trees, and seasonal touches throughout the ship. Ama also surprised us with special holiday moments—little details that made the cruise feel intimate and joyful.

Some of my favorite festive touches included:

• Seasonal décor throughout the ship

• Special holiday-themed meals and treats

• Cozy evenings in the lounge

• A warm, celebratory atmosphere among guests and crew

It felt like celebrating the holidays with a floating boutique hotel—comfortable, elegant, and full of heart.

Wine & Port Tastings: A Highlight of the Journey

No trip to the Douro would be complete without diving into Portugal’s wine culture and this cruise delivered in the best way.

From vineyard visits to traditional port lodges, the tastings were both educational and fun. We sampled rich ports, crisp whites, and bold reds while learning about the region’s centuries-old winemaking traditions.

These experiences weren’t just about tasting wine, they were about connecting with local producers and understanding the story behind every glass.

For wine lovers, this itinerary is truly a dream.

Why I Love This Itinerary for My Clients

This Douro River cruise is ideal for travelers who want:

✨ A relaxed, scenic European experience

✨ Exceptional food and wine

✨ Small-ship intimacy

✨ Seamless logistics

✨ A touch of holiday magic (in December sailings)

The combination of Lisbon, Porto, and the Douro Valley creates a well-rounded journey that blends history, culture, cuisine, and comfort.

A Wonderful Experience as a Solo Traveler

This particular journey was also especially meaningful for me because I traveled solo and it truly reinforced why river cruising is such an incredible option for solo travelers.

From the moment I stepped onboard, I felt welcomed, comfortable, and completely at ease. With shared excursions, open-seating dining, and welcoming common spaces, it’s easy to connect with fellow travelers without ever feeling pressured. You can be as social or as independent as you’d like.

River cruises naturally create a sense of community. Within days, familiar faces become friends, and every meal, tour, and scenic sail feels shared in the best way.

For anyone considering traveling solo but wanting the perfect balance of independence, connection, and support, river cruising is hard to beat. It offers built-in structure, safety, and companionship—while still giving you plenty of space to recharge and enjoy the journey on your own terms.

This trip was a wonderful reminder of just how empowering and rewarding solo travel can be and why I confidently recommend river cruising to my solo clients.
